It has been 2 weeks

Well, I haven't written on this blog for a couple of weeks now. Hmm...where to begin.

I haven't done a long run it quite some time; call it lack of energy, lack of time, ...any of those excuses will work. I have, however, been running on a consisten basis, which is a good thing. A few miles 4 days a week and I am good to go. It is really quite energizing, in a weird sort of way.

But, alas, the news is not all good. Yesterday, I had to stop my run short because I got a little light-headed and dizzy on the treadmill. I've never had that happen before. That didn't stop me today and I went back for more and felt good. Hopefully that doesn't happen again.

The other problem is that I seem to have developed shin splints, at least that is my own diagnosis. I've had them before, but it's nothing knee braces can't take care of. They will only last a month or two and will go away once my legs adjust to the constant force they are under when I run.

Keeping up the running!

Well, it has been a week since I started running at the Y and I am still going strong. It feels good to get up and get moving and still have plenty of time to do all that other stuff in the day. I just hope I am not going too hard too fast. I have been to the gym 4 days this week as well as played hockey on another day. That means, I went from nothing to 20 miles a week, which is a huge jump. I just hope I still have motivation and the gusto to keep running.

Oh, and one thing I learned the hard way. If you are going to do a long run on a Sunday then hop on the bus for 7 hours, make sure to stretch first. Nothing like sitting in a cramped seat with a need to stretch out. I was stiff all day Monday.

Day 1

Well, I did it. This morning I woke up and ran 3 miles and spent 15 minutes on the stationary bike. It felt great.

And to boot, I even read 4 articles for class and wrote the one page summary, and it's only Wednesday. It was such a productive day and I can't wait to be just as productive tomorrow.

Why I started this blog

Life without work is tough. I find myself with too much free-time on my hand, so much that I can't actually do the things I want to do. I'll just do it later. People have told me countless things I can (and should do) to occupy my time: volunteer, exercise, enjoy life, go back to China...and everything in between. That was before I let the secret out that I am doing a masters degree in Hamilton while living in Ottawa, but that doesn't matter because I still have much time on my hands.

So, this is to announce to the world that I have started running again. Currently, I don't have any specific goals in my mind or races that I would like to run, but that's the general idea, at least for now. Honestly, I do have a race or two in mind that I would like to do and perhaps I will run them within the year. However, I do not want to set any unrealistic goals for myself as I have been relatively inactive for the last year except for games of pick-up hockey on Saturday and the occasional basketball game in Beijing.

While I prefer to run outdoors, I am also sane enough to understand that there are two seasons in Ottawa: rain and snow. Running in the rain is bad enough; running in a few feet of snow is even worse. Thus, this morning, I took out a membership at the local YMCA so I can run indoors for the winter as well as do the other countless activities included in my membership. Who knows, I can try everything from spinning to karate. I even have a super-snazzy watch that tracks distance, speed, time, calories burned,...and all that stuff. I've had the watch for a while, but now, I might actually figure out how to use it properly.

I have run many races in the past (10+years ago) and even did most of the training for the Ottawa ING marathon twice recently (hence the watch), but I never actually ran the race. A rather large case of dehydration one year and a toe injury the second forced me to withdraw. That doesn't mean I plan on running that marathon this year, but one other thing I noticed while training for those races was the lack of motivation I had. I am hoping, somehow, that blogging about my running/exercise experiences will somehow keep me motivated for whatever my running goals end up being.
